Wisconsin Public Radio is seeking to co-locate its two stations in the Ashland area at the same tower site.
WHWA/104.7 (Washburn) currently transmits from the WEGZ/105.9 tower near Washburn with 17.5kW/185m (class C2). It has applied to use 25kW/63m (class C3) from a state-owned tower in Ashland’s industrial park owned already used by WPR’s WUWS/90.9 (Ashland).
The move would increase WHWA’s signal strength in Ashland but remove some coverage along Lake Superior’s South Shore in an area already served by WHSA/89.9 (Brule), which simulcasts with WHWA.
WUWS signed on in 2011 carrying WPR’s Ideas Network and WHWA followed in 2013 carrying the News & Music service, both replacing translators that had operated on the same frequencies. The translators had signed on in the 1990s as a result of WPR’s “A Clear Signal” campaign to improve reception in the Chequamegon Bay area.
