The FCC has granted a low-power FM station to a municipal government in the southeastern Twin Cities metro area.
The City of Woodbury’s new station will operate on 91.5. It will transmit with 24 Watts from a building in the city’s Central Park, providing a strong signal to most of the suburb.
Woodbury’s application stated that the new radio station will be operated in concert with the city’s community television channels. It will carry city meetings, live school sports, programming that supports “Building a Safer Community” initiatives, and information to sustain and improve the natural environment.
The Woodbury station is one of several small metro-area LPFM stations sought during a recent filing window, with one already granted to AddiEun Foundation in the northwest metro. Another application from the City of Cottage Grove for an 100-Watt LPFM station on 104.5 remains pending.
As noted in a previous report, grants of new FM radio stations in the Twin Cities metro have become rare due to the crowded nature of the dial, with room only left for small signals that cover a portion of the metro.
