Data Dump: My Network TV’s Variable Airtimes in the Upper Midwest

Posted on August 25, 2022 by Jon Ellis

When talking about different TV networks, My Network TV stands out in several ways.

For one, even though the word “network” is in its name, it’s not officially a network. FOX launched MNT in 2006 with original programming, mostly serving former UPN affiliates, but switched to a “programming service model” three years later.

For another thing, MNT no longer runs any original programming. Its current lineup consists of reruns of Dateline, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. (Adding to confusion, Dateline reruns are also syndicated to local stations and separately air on True Crime Network, sometimes at the exact time MNT is airing other Dateline reruns.)

A third thing that makes My Network TV interesting is an evolution in when stations air its programming. While it was originally intended to air in the first two hours of prime time (7 to 9 p.m. Central time), some affiliates are now running MNT as a late-night programming block. That even includes owned-and-operated affiliate WFTC in Minneapolis, which runs the first hour at 11 p.m. and the second at 12:30 a.m., with a news repeat in the middle!

Though many My Network TV stations have built their entire identity around the “My” branding, the network only provides ten weekly hours of programming, leaving stations to find other shows for the remaining 158 hours per week. Many fill out the schedule with syndicated shows while some carry subchannel networks such as MeTV, H&I, or DABL outside of prime time.
