FCC Monitor: S.D. AM Station Off Air Again; Iowa, U.P. FM’s Back On

Posted on July 3, 2023January 30, 2024 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to previously-reported items and other recent regulatory filings and actions concerning Upper Midwest broadcast stations. This report is created by the author and is not an official report of the FCC.

Iowa

Community Public Media’s KPVL/89.1 (Postville) returned to the air June 28. Listeners report the station is running a Classic Hits mix:

Michigan

Iron River Community Broadcasting’s W250CQ/97.9 (Iron River) returned to the air June 11 after repairs and testing. W250CQ relays WFER/1230.

The FCC granted Aurora Media’s W254AG/98.7 (Escanaba) a move to 99.1 as W256EE. The station will move its transmitter to the WYKX site northwest of Escanaba and relay WYKX.

Minnesota

Park Public Radio’s KPPS-LP/97.5 (St. Louis Park) reported that it returned to the air on June 18. The station’s filing noted that structural and mechanical issues remain with the antenna structure that still need to be resolved.

Meanwhile, Park Public Radio requested tolling of the construction deadlines for its new non-commercial stations on 88.7 in Aitkin, 88.3 in Medford, 90.1 in Red Wing, 88.3 in Virginia, and 88.1 in Belmond, Iowa. PPR says it believes the outcome of a dispute over whether it can move KPPS-LP to a new site will affect its ability to construct the other stations. PPR is required to divest KPPS-LP if any of the new stations sign on; it says it has found a new entity to take over KPPS-LP but the transfer cannot happen unless KPPS-LP’s transmitter site move is approved.

The FCC granted the University of Northwestern-St. Paul’s K224DB/92.7 (Willmar) special temporary authority to transmit an HD Radio signal.

Nebraska

The FCC approved Flood Communications’ purchase of KSDZ/95.5 (Gordon) and KDJL/99.5 (Kilgore-Valentine) from DJ Broadcasting.

South Dakota

Mount Rushmore Broadcasting’s KFCR/1490 (Custer), which recently reported that it returned to the air on June 18, has now reported that it left the air again on June 26 due to equipment issues. The filing says the station will not be able to complete repairs within 30 days.

Wisconsin

Trinity Broadcasting Network’s WWRS-TV/52.1 (Mayville) reported that it resumed full-power operations on June 27 after briefly operating at reduced power.

Edge Spectrum’s W39CV-D/W35DM-D (Minocqua) requested another extension of its construction deadline to February 1, 2024, citing delays in scheduling a tower crew.

Armada Media‘s previously-reported purchase of five radio stations in Rice Lake from TKC Inc. was formally filed for approval with the FCC, listing a purchase price of $4.951 million.
