FCC Monitor: Another New FM Signs On in Nebraska; Black Hills FM Sold

Posted on July 31, 2023 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to previously-reported items and other recent regulatory filings and actions concerning Upper Midwest broadcast stations. This report is created by the author and is not an official report of the FCC.

Minnesota

We Have This Hope Christian Radio was granted the callsigns KGPL for its future station on 88.1 in Crookston and KJCL for its future station on 88.3 in Fergus Falls.

Nebraska

Bible Broadcasting Network reported that it has signed on new station KYBF/90.1 (Scottsbluff), which transmits with 920W/62m from the same site that was previously used by BBN translator K208CK/89.5 (Scottsbluff). BBN reported that K208CK has gone off the air and it’s exploring options for the future of the translator.

VSS Catholic Communications’ KJWM/91.5 (Grand Island) completed an upgrade from 11.5kW to 35kW, with its antenna remaining at 180 meters above average terrain.

Tri-State Broadcasting Association was granted the callsign KJYS for its new station on 88.1 in McCook. The station filed a license to cover application in June requesting program test authority, which is still pending.

South Dakota

Midwest Communications’ KTWB/92.5 (Sioux Falls) is transmitting with 10kW ERP, rather than its usual 100kW, due to a problem with its transmitter. The station’s request for special temporary authority says it’s uncertain when the required components will be delivered due to apparent shortages and supply chain delays.

G.I.G., Incorporated’s KCPO-LD/26 (Sioux Falls) reported that it resumed operations on July 19.

Wisconsin

The FCC approved Civic Media’s purchase of WCQM/98.3 (Park Falls), WPFP/980 (Park Falls), and WPFP translator W276DJ/103.1 (Park Falls) from the Marks family’s Park Falls Broadcasting Corporation.

Wyoming

KHAD/104.5 (Upton), which normally reaches the northern Black Hills in South Dakota, remains off the air after antenna icing conditions in January led to reflected power that damaged the station’s transmitter. in a request for an extension of special temporary authority to remain silent, KHAD says failed components in the transmitter have been replaced but that a tube still needs replacement. Due to supply shortages, delivery is estimated in late August. Meanwhile, Breck Media Group Wyoming is seeking FCC approval to buy KHAD from Casper Radio Group for $7,500. The station also requested a callsign change to KWBB effective Aug. 14.
