WIAN/1240 (Ishpeming) has gone off the air permanently after a 73-year history.
An attorney for Sovereign Communications did not give a reason for the decision in a surrender letter sent to the FCC on July 30. Sovereign was in the process of selling WIAN to AMC Partners Escanaba LLC.
FCC records show WIAN signed on in 1947 as WJPD. It changed callsign to WIAN in 1992, with the WJPD callsign continuing on 92.3 FM.
In recent decades, WIAN has simulcast a News/Talk/Sports format with WDMJ/1320 (Marquette). WIAN’s 1kW signal provided nighttime coverage for areas west of Marquette not reached by WDMJ’s 135-Watt nighttime facility, through the stations had more overlap during the day when WDMJ is 5kW.
