A Huron-area station knocked off the air by a lightning strike is using the outage as a promotion for its web stream.
The antenna of 65kW Classic Rocker “Big Jim 93.3” (KJRV Wessington Springs-Huron) was struck by lightning on April 10. According to a request for special temporary authority filed with the FCC, the station operated at reduced power for several weeks after some repairs were made following the strike.
Then on May 1, a tower crew discovered a hole in the transmission line, and KJRV went off the air. KJRV’s filing says a new transmission line, antenna parts, and tube are on order, and the station may return to the air in a month.
In the meantime, the station is channeling AC/DC by encouraging listeners to tune into its web stream for a chance to win $933 when they hear a “Thunderstruck” sound.
KJRV is owned by Dakota Communications and operated alongside Country outlet KOKK/1210 (Huron) and Hot Adult Contemporary-formatted “Tiger 95.3” (K237EL and KIJV/1340 Huron).
