Wausau Station Changes Format, Another Flip Coming ‘Very Soon’

Posted on November 25, 2019 by Jon Ellis

A Wausau station has changed its format, telling Facebook fans that it’s adopted the programming of a sister station that will also change format “very soon.”

WXCO/1230 dropped “Cool Oldies” for “Sports Fan 1230” on Monday, Nov. 25. The Facebook post says WXCO is adopting the format of sister station WDTX/100.5 (Rothschild-Wausau), which has carried ESPN and other sports programming as “Sports Fan 100.5” since 2010.

FCC records indicate WDTX officially changed its callsign to WAVL on Oct. 15.

RadioInsight notes that though the change hasn’t actually happened yet, there’s already a website launched at wavlfm.com promoting all-Christmas music. The site links to a Facebook page called Wave 100.5.

This is WXCO’s third incarnation as an ESPN affiliate, having carried the network prior to 2010 and again briefly in 2015 before the Oldies format launched. The “Sports Fan” lineup also includes Mike Heller’s regional show and Dan Patrick.

The stations are owned by Steven Resnik’s Sunrise Broadcasting, LLC. The company does not own any other stations in the immediate Wausau market, but is advising fans of WXCO’s previous Oldies format to try pulling in sister station WJMT/730 (Merrill).

WXCO has a construction permit for FM translator W258DK/99.5 (Wausau).
