Soft Oldies Give Way to Classic Country in Eastern Wis.

Posted on January 20, 2021 by Jon Ellis

An eastern Wisconsin station has dropped a unique Soft Oldies/Light Adult Contemporary format in favor of Classic Country.

“Cow Country” launched Wednesday, Jan. 20, on Galaxie Broadcasting’s W253CW/98.5 and WGXI/1420 (Plymouth). The playlist consists primarily of songs from the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s and is positioned as being “the Country made just for Plymouth.”

W253CW operates under the umbrella of the Sheboygan stations, including Midwest Communications Country-formatted “B93.7” (WBFM Sheboygan). Plymouth itself has about 8,500 residents and is home to several major cheese companies, including Sargento.

The previous “Love 98.5” format had begun in 2019 with the launch of W253CW as a derivation of the Adult Standards format that had previously aired on the AM station.

“Sadly, in radio much like life, nothing is forever and things eventually change. Today that time has come for us,” the station wrote in a Facebook post announcing the format change.

The new website for “Cow Country” is not yet up and running, but its web audio stream is still active.

The region had been in the very unusual position of having two stations in the Soft Gold genre since Seehafer Broadcasting runs Easy Listening on WEMP/98.9 (Two Rivers-Sheboygan).
