One Wisconsin AM Station Seeks Upgrade as Another Downgrades

Posted on June 11, 2021 by Jon Ellis

A northeastern Wisconsin AM radio station is seeking an upgrade made possible by the downgrade of a Milwaukee-market station.

Good Karma Broadcasting’s WGKB/1510 (Waukesha) informed the FCC on June 8, through a license to cover application, that it has completed a downgrade to 250 Watts non-directional, daytime-only.

WGKB had previously used 23kW day and 20kW during critical hours from a three-tower directional array. It now uses just one of the original towers after most of the transmitter site was sold by the station’s previous owner.

The downgrade to 250 Watts returns 1510 to the power level it had used from 1947 to 1961 and removes strong coverage of Milwaukee.

WGKB serves as the originating station for W269DL/101.7 (Milwaukee), which carries a Black Talk format as “101.7 The Truth.”

Meanwhile, Mark Heller’s WLAK/1530 (New Holstein) is seeking to take over some of WGKB’s former coverage area. It’s applied to move to 1520 and upgrade from 350 to 550 Watts daytime only.

The WLAK upgrade would improve its daytime signal to Appleton and Oshkosh. The station carries a “True Oldies” format.
