“Thunder” Rocks Third Central Nebraska Signal

Posted on October 11, 2021May 7, 2024 by Jon Ellis

Legacy Communications has added a third signal to its “Thunder” Rock format in central Nebraska, displacing “Big Country.”

KMTY/97.7 (Gibbon) began simulcasting “Thunder” on Sept. 6, according to posts on its Facebook page. “Thunder” is also heard on K259CZ/99.7 (Grand Island), originating on KRGI-FM-HD3.

“Thunder” had originally launched on KKJK/103.1 (Ravenna-Grand Island) from the station’s launch in 2006 until it changed to Contemporary Hits in 2012.

KMTY’s 50kW/148m (class C2) signal is strong in Kearney and Hastings, while K259CZ covers the immediate Grand Island area.

KMTY had carried Country since 2013. Legacy also runs a heritage Country format on KRGI-FM/96.5 (Grand Island), which overlaps with much of KMTY’s coverage area. “Big Country” had also competed with several other regional Country signals, including NRG’s KRNY/102.3 (Kearney) and the Nebraska Rural Radio Association’s KRVN-FM/93.1 (Lexington).

Here’s what they sounded like a month before the format change:
