Minnesota Public Radio Sells Idaho Outpost

Posted on December 11, 2023 by Jon Ellis

Minnesota Public Radio is selling its Classical music station in the ski community of Sun Valley, Idaho.

An asset purchase agreement filed with the FCC indicates the Idaho State Board of Education will pay MPR $120,000 for KWRV/91.9 (Sun Valley).

The Idaho State Board of Education operates Boise State Public Radio, which has a network of stations across the state carrying several services.

MPR signed on KWRV in 1993. Online music listings linked on its website indicate KWRV carries the nationally-syndicated Classical 24 service produced at MPR. Its regional manager is based in Duluth, MN and its account executive is based in St. Cloud, MN.

KWRV transmits with 100 Watts from a mountaintop near Sun Valley, achieving a coverage area nearly equivalent to a 6kW/100m facility due to its 656m height above average terrain.

KWRV is MPR’s only station outside of the Upper Midwest (it also has a few licenses in Iowa, Michigan, and South Dakota) but parent American Public Media Group also owns several stations in the Los Angeles area through Southern California Public Radio.
