Weekly Log: WPR Plans Classical Expansion; Longtime KS95 DJ Dies

Posted on January 26, 2024January 25, 2024 by Jon Ellis

A Wisconsin Public Radio job posting for a Classical music host says the network is planning to expand its Classical music offerings. The listing says there will be “a new afternoon/evening drive-time program as part of our growing classical music service” and says it’s preferred that the new host work out of Milwaukee. Currently, WPR’s Classical programming is not available on analog radio in Milwaukee and the network’s News & Music service does not offer afternoon drive Classical music programming anywhere in the state. (24-hour Classical is offered online and on several HD2 channels, including in Milwaukee.)

WUWM/89.7 (Milwaukee) has hired Becky Grandone as vice president of operations.

KS95 (KSTP-FM/94.5 St. Paul) reports that former longtime afternoon host Larry “Moon” Thompson has died of multiple sclerosis at the age of 65. KSTP-TV and WCCO-TV also have remembrances.

Longtime KHAK/98.1 (Cedar Rapids) afternoon host Bob James announced plans to retire. James has been with the station since 1990.

The Iowa Public Broadcasting Board has appointed Andrew Batt as the next executive director and general manager of Iowa PBS.

Nyah Adams has been promoted to morning anchor at Hubbard ABC affiliate WDIO/10.1 (Duluth).

Broadcasting & Cable reported that Mission Broadcasting, whose stations include FOX affiliate KLJB/18.1 (Davenport), has resolved a retransmission consent dispute with DISH Network.

CBS announced that Allen Media has renewed its affiliations for five stations, including KIMT/3.1 (Mason City-Rochester).

Local newscasts from stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group can no longer be streamed on connected TV’s after the sale of the STIRR app, as reported by Cord Cutters News.

KCRG-TV recently reported that the Iowa Broadcasters Association is opposing legislation to make daylight saving time year-round in Iowa, citing the impact on viewers in border markets. All but one of Iowa’s TV markets cross state lines.
