FCC Monitor: Another Request to Review Iowa LPFM Denial

Posted on February 23, 2026February 21, 2026 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to previously-reported items and other recent regulatory filings and actions concerning Upper Midwest broadcast stations. This report is created by the author and is not an official report of the FCC.

The FCC has voted to hold a filing window for new FM translators in the portion of the FM band reserved for non-commercial use (88-92 MHz). It’s notable that the eligible applicants will include non-commercial AM stations, since there are not currently any AM-on-FM translators in the reserved band. The date of the filing window has not yet been announced.

Iowa

Holy Mother Mary has filed an application for review of the FCC’s most recent dismissal of the group’s application for a new low-power FM station on 98.7 in Cascade. (To quickly recap, the initial issue was that 98.7 is reserved for a future full-power FM station in the region.) In its 28-page application, the group asks, among other things, “Was it error for the [Audio Division] not to include vacant channel allotments in its FM and LPFM database and then dismiss an application without a meaningful opportunity to file a curative amendment which would result in the application becoming grantable?”

Michigan

Results Broadcasting of Iron Mountain’s WOBE/100.7 (Crystal Falls) was granted a reduction in power from 100kW to 30kW, keeping its antenna at 199 meters above average terrain and retaining its class C1 status.

Nebraska

K-Love Inc.’s K285GP/104.9 (Millard-Omaha), which carries Air1, returned to full power of 70 Watts on Feb. 16.

Standard Media/KLKN Lincoln License LLC has filed an extension of consummation of the sale of KLKN/8 (Lincoln) to Rincon Broadcasting Group. An extension of consummation means that the sale has not yet closed, but is still expected to close in the future.

North Dakota

Real Presence Radio’s KZZQ/101.9 (Richardton) returned to full-power operations on Feb. 16. According to a previous filing, KZZQ had been at reduced power since Dec. 30 due to failed transmitter power supply modules.

No significant filings or actions from Minnesota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin in the past week
