When I scheduled a trip to Big Bend National Park for January, the main motivation was to visit the Chisos Mountain area before a long-term closure begins in May 2026.
But interesting radio reception is always a draw for me, too. Shortly before my visit, RadioWorld’s Nick Langan featured Big Bend as one of “The Top 20 U.S. Locations to Scan the FM Dial.” The list is based on locations that are outside of the main coverage areas of any FM signal, leaving a wide-open band for long-distance radio reception, known as DX.
(Here’s a background on the types of different distant FM reception.)
Winter isn’t generally known for great FM reception. But when I emailed Langan to tell him I was headed to Big Bend, he encouraged me to be ready since E-skip can happen in the winter, too.
I was in the park for four days and heard only some mild regional tropo on the first three days. Then, as I was headed out of the park on the last day (Jan. 7), I struck gold.
I was listening to the regional signal of KRTS/93.5 (Marfa) when I heard what sounded like co-channel interference. Almost not believing it, I started to scan around the dial and quickly came across “KQ94.5” and “96.5 The Walleye.”
Upper Midwest radio fans will recognize those stations as being in Bismarck, North Dakota. Except I was still in Texas, a few miles from the Mexican border. The E-skip was here!
I found a little-used pullout alongside the park road and set up my laptop to run a software-defined radio (SDR), which allows for recording chunks of the FM band for later listening. In this case, I was using an RSPdx receiver and a rabbit-ears style whip antenna attached to a side window with a suction cup.
The 70-degree January desert breeze wafted through the window as dozens of FM signals drifted in from hundreds of miles away! During about 90 minutes of DX’ing, a few people drove past but no one stopped to read the interpretive sign (or ask about the reception).
What I heard was a DX’ers dream, with strong E-skip giving way to meteor scatter from multiple states. I’d heard meteor scatter before but, in decades of DX’ing, I’d never been able to identify a station coming in via meteor scatter. Until now.
I noted some stations received during live listening on the roadside, but most of my loggings came weeks later while reviewing the recordings at home. Since the RSPdx is limited to recording 10 MHz of bandwidth, I stopped recording several times to change frequency to get each part of the band.
Reviewing the recordings, I’ve logged 178 stations from 20 states and provinces! Most of the E-skip came from Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky.
The process of reviewing the recordings can be long and tedious, since the magic of an SDR recording allows you to keep rewinding to listen to each frequency and re-listen to things that aren’t clear the first time. The SDR recordings yielded dozens of hours of audio to check when each frequency is considered!
Looking through my log, you’ll see that many of the stations were identified by PI code, which is a unique code assigned to each station. However, the code will not display unless the station is coming in strongly enough (and weak signals sometimes cause bogus PI codes). The National Radio Systems Committee has a database of PI codes.
The full log is at the bottom of this page, but first, here are some tales of the DX hunt and how I was able to identify some stations:
Hearing Canada from near the Mexican border
Parked a few miles from the Rio Grande, one of the first stations I heard was from the other side of a different border: CIMX-FM/88.7 (Windsor, Ont.) was promoting the recent return of its legacy “89X” Alternative format:
I was able to hear one other station from Ontario (CIDR-FM/93.9 Windsor), but interestingly enough, I didn’t hear any stations from nearby Michigan.
The first minutes of the recording show a strong E-skip opening with stations also coming in from Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio at the same time as CIMX. More stations from North Dakota. South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Kentucky eventually joined them.
Strong meteor scatter path to Colorado
After a half-hour of E-skip from the Midwest, I was surprised to hear a Rock format pop up for 12 seconds on 99.5 with a PI code matching KQMT (Denver, Colo.) Since the reception was recorded with an SDR, I was able rewind to check other frequencies at the exact same moment. Sure enough, several other Colorado stations came in during this exact same 12-second window. Some had PI codes while others had music that matched their formats, so I noted them as tentative loggings.
In this video, I rewind the SDR recording multiple times to show most of the stations coming in from Colorado:
Apparent meteor scatter also brought in a few stations from Arizona, California, Louisiana, and Oklahoma as the event continued.
High school basketball score clinches tentative logging
On 92.9, a station popped in for about 20 seconds with a sports report. “Men’s basketball from last night, it was ??? took two games from Vandalia at home, NCHS gym. Eagles won the varsity game there, 60 to 42…”
Some internet searching led to the MaxPreps website, which lists Newton vs. Vandalia, Ill,, playing on Jan. 6 with a matching score. Newton is in the main coverage area of WSEI/92.9 (Olney, Ill.)
Low-power FM and translator stations from more than 1,000 miles away
On 103.7, I heard “The Connection, connecting you with Christ.”
The only station using that slogan that comes up in a Google search is KPAR-LP/103.7 (Dickinson, N.D.) I’ve been to Dickinson several times and recorded airchecks of KPAR-LP. Wouldn’t you be surprised to guess what I found in a 2023 recording?
It’s an exact match! And quite surprising to hear a low-power FM station 1,200 miles away.
As I moved up to higher frequencies in my SDR recordings, I was also surprised to hear what appears to be an FM translator on 104.9 that’s about 50 miles away from KPAR-LP:
It appears this is K285HH (Lemmon, S.D.), which relays KBJM/1400. While no station information was heard during the brief time it came in, the ad for “Nelson Panels of Meadow” promotes the website nelsonpanels.com, which says the business is located in South Dakota and within KBJM’s coverage area.
Matching a fragment of a legal ID
On 94.9, meteor scatter brought in a station for two seconds during its top-of-the-hour ID, interrupting a national newscast coming in from a different station:
That’s someone saying “Lotus Corp radio station.” Lotus Corp. only owns two radio stations on 94.9, so I decided to listen to their web streams to see if I could match the wording of the ID. Here’s the ID from KMXZ-FM Tucson as heard on their online stream:
To drive home the point, here’s a quick edit of the DX immediately followed by the same words from the web stream:
Yep, I’m counting it! (For the record, I also checked the other Lotus station, KRVB Nampa, Idaho, which has a completely different ID.)
Saying the right thing at the right time
Meteor scatter usually only lasts a second, if that. There’s not a good chance that a station is going to be saying something identifiable in that time. But sometimes, it happens:
That’s KMOD-FM/97.5 (Tulsa, Oklahoma) quickly popping in over weak reception of another station!
Finally hearing from home
As the DX event was beginning to wind down, I was disappointed that I hadn’t yet heard anything from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Michigan, even though I’d heard stations from states to the east and west. Then I heard this on 100.3:
That’s an ad for the St. Paul RV Supershow from Jan. 15 to 18 at the St. Paul RiverCentre. It can only be KFXN-FM/100.3 (Minneapolis)!
I tried using the same method as I’d used with Colorado to identify other Twin Cities stations at that exact moment. Though I did hear brief reception on several other frequencies potentially matching what Twin Cities stations might have been playing at that time, I did not hear any identifying information or receive PI codes for any other Minnesota stations, so I decided not to count them. (But it was probably them.)
Here is the full log from the event with additional audio. Those in bold are E-skip or meteor scatter. Note that while some stations had been logged on earlier days in the park, all were also heard during the event (I just didn’t re-log them).

I also recorded a lot of AM radio reception during my time in the park, thinking that was going to be the highlight of the trip (many Mexican stations that can’t be heard in the Upper Midwest are easy to hear at Big Bend). I’ve yet to go through most of those recordings, but perhaps they’ll be the focus of a future report!
