Civic Media Flips Upper Peninsula Station from Talk to Oldies

Posted on April 5, 2026 by Jon Ellis

Michigan Civic Media Alliance has changed the format of an Upper Peninsula radio station that it bought last year.

WMPL/920 (Hancock) and its FM translator, W297CD/107.7 (Hancock), have dropped a decades-old News/Talk/Sports format in favor of full-service Oldies as “Pure Gold 107.3 The Yooper.”

Elaine Hendrickson continues in mornings with the new format, presenting local information, news, weather, and sports. The playlist runs from the 1960s to the early 1980s and the station also features news reports from WLUC/6 (Marquette).

The flip leaves the Keweenaw Peninsula without a News/Talk/Sports station but brings back music that had previously been dropped by other stations.

“Yooper” runs alongside “Mix 93” (WKMJ/93.5 Hancock), which has refreshed its format to Bright Adult Contemporary. Sam Sears continues as “Mix” morning host and the station will continue to air Michigan Tech sports.
