Weekly Log: KIMT Drops Weekend News, No More Hockey on CBC

Posted on June 19, 2026June 18, 2026 by Jon Ellis

Allen Media CBS affiliate KIMT/3.1 (Mason City-Rochester) has ended weekend newscasts, which had aired at 10 p.m. The station confirmed the change at the end of its Friday, June 12, 10 p.m. newscast, noting that it will continue to update its website on the weekends and break in with severe weather coverage. KIMT’s two competitors continue to offer weekend newscasts.

Meteorologist Lindsey Slater has joined Scripps NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV/4 (Milwaukee). Slater had been with Hearst ABC affiliate WISN-TV/12 (Milwaukee) until March.

Meteorologist Morgan Strackbein announced her departure from Tegna ABC affiliate WQAD/8 (Moline-Quad Cities) for a new job outside of TV.

Afternoon host Jonathan Knight announced he’s been cut from “Kix 101” (KXIA/101.1 Marshalltown) amid economic concerns. Knight has several decades of experience in multiple Midwestern markets.

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association reports that Judson Beck is retiring after a 44-year career in broadcasting. Beck has been the vice president and general manager of Nexstar CBS affiliate WFRV/5 (Green Bay) since 2022. Previously, he was VP/GM of Nexstar FOX affiliate WLAX/25 (La Crosse).

Julie Nelson, news anchor at Tegna NBC affiliate KARE 11 (Minneapolis), announced that she will be off the air for a while while recovering from a boating accident.

The CBC announced that it will no longer carry hockey games after failing to reach a new deal to simulcast games from SportsNet, which acquired the rights to Saturday night games in 2014. Though some reports lamented that people will need a subscription to watch hockey, that was already the reality for people outside of Canada’s largest cities since the CBC shut down the vast majority of its broadcast TV transmitters in 2012.
