Omaha’s only commercial Hip-Hop station has switched to Country following the recent sale of the station.
KOPW/106.9 (Plattsmouth-Omaha), formerly “Power 106.9,” is now “Country One.” The new format launched Aug. 13, exactly one month after Usher Media closed on its purchase of KOPW and four other stations from NRG Media.
The new 25kW “Country One” takes on iHeartMedia’s 100kW Country-formatted “KAT 103.7” (KXKT Glenwood-Omaha) as well as iHeart Classic Country station “The Wolf 93.3” (KFFF Bennington-Omaha).
Unless another commercial station adopts the format, the change ends a 27-year run of Rhythmic Hits and Hip-Hop stations in Omaha that has included “Channel 97-7,” “Channel 94-1” (which later evolved to its current mainstream Contemporary Hits format), “Hot 107.7 and 97.3,” and, since 2006, “Power 106.9.” The market also had R&B stations in the 1970s and 1980s.
