Midwest Communications has taken WDKF/1440 (Green Bay) off the air, citing financial reasons in an FCC filing.
WDKF went off the air Sept. 9 and filed a request for special temporary authority to remain silent. The filing states, “WDKF is silent due to adverse market conditions while the licensee explores revenue options for viable and sustainable programming and advertising sales options for the station.”
WDKF was formerly WNFL; its programming moved to what is now WNFL/99.7 (Sturgeon Bay-Green Bay) last year. The company informed the FCC in July that translator station W270AJ/101.9 (Green Bay), which previously relayed AM 1440, formally switched its input feed to WNFL/99.7.
FCC rules allow stations to remain off the air for up to one year while remaining licensed.
The 1440 license traces back to WJPG/810, which signed on in 1948. The station moved to 1440 in 1951 and changed its call letters to WNFL in 1967.
Midwest operates seven other radio stations in northeastern Wisconsin, including WTAQ/1360 (Green Bay) and six full-power FM stations in the Green Bay and Appleton markets.
