Station on Minnesota’s North Shore Sold to Central Minn. Broadcasters

Posted on March 15, 2022 by Jon Ellis

The only commercial radio station on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior is being sold to a broadcaster with ties to a future station in the area.

A purchase agreement filed with the FCC on Tuesday, March 15, indicates Carpenter Broadcasting is buying “The Otter” WFNX/95.3 (Grand Marais) from Matt Butler’s Shire & Shore Communications LLC for $55,000.

Carpenter Broadcasting is owned by Dennis Carpenter and son Lucas Carpenter. Companies owned by the Carpenters also own Wireless LLC, which holds a construction permit for a new station on 96.9 in Grand Marais.

The Carpenters also own several stations in central Minnesota. Lucas Carpenter’s Crystal Media Group owns two radio stations in Albany, while Dennis Carpenter holds an interest in companies that own two radio stations in Elk River and Princeton and a low-power TV station in St. Cloud.

“The Otter” launched with a broad Adult Alternative format last year.

Butler is also the president of Elemental Public Media, which has recently been granted construction permits for new non-commercial FM stations in Babbitt, Baudette, and International Falls.
