In the early days of radio, network affiliation almost defined a station in much the same way that it does now with TV. Directories from the first few decades of radio don’t list a format, just a network affiliation!
Radio networks do survive at the top of the hour, when many stations coast to coast (mostly in News/Talk formats) still join the network for the news headlines. Some of the legacy networks have disappeared, while others have emerged in their place.
For TV, you can find numerous directories listing where to find networks in each city. But what about radio news networks? Here’s a list!
