Weekly Log: KARE Sweeps Major Emmys; Historic First in Madison

Awards

The 2022 Upper Midwest Emmy Award recipients were announced on Oct. 15. Some of the major awards went to:

  • Tegna NBC affiliate KARE/11 (Minneapolis) for overall excellence, news excellence, and evening newscast in markets 1-75.
  • Hearst CBS affiliate KCCI/8 (Des Moines) for daytime newscast in markets 1-75.
  • Nexstar CBS affiliate KELO-TV/11 (Sioux Falls) for evening newscast in markets 76-120.
  • Forum ABC affiliate WDAY-TV/6 (Fargo) for daytime newscast in markets 76-120.
  • Gray TV NBC affiliate KTTC/10 (Rochester) for evening newscast in markets 121+.
  • Allen Media CBS affiliate KIMT/3 (Mason City-Rochester) for daytime newscast in markets 121+.

Meanwhile, at NAB Show New York, Hubbard Radio’s “KS95” (KSTP-FM/94.5 St. Paul) received a Marconi Radio Award for AC Station of the Year.


People

Allen Media ABC affiliate WKOW/27 (Madison) promoted Karley Marotta to sports director, noting that she is the first woman to hold the post in the station’s history. Former sports director Lance Veesa is now an anchor/reporter for the station.

Tegna NBC affiliate KARE/11 (Minneapolis) announced the hiring of Samie Solina as a multi-skilled journalist.

Reporter Max Cotton has joined Nexstar NBC affiliate WHO-DT/13 (Des Moines). Cotton previously worked for Gray NBC affiliate WEAU/13 (Eau Claire).

Meteorologist Katie Nickolaou announced her departure from Sinclair FOX/CBS affiliate KPTH/44 (Sioux City).

It is with many mixed emotions that I announce this will be my final week working at Siouxland News.

I have accepted a new job as a Weekday Morning Meteorologist at a station significantly closer to home. My final broadcast will be this Friday the 21st. pic.twitter.com/k32Z0QpbvY

Matt Vis, formerly a reporter for CBC Radio in Thunder Bay, has joined Dougall Media’s TBNewswatch as managing editor.

Some (more) personal news: I'm now taking on the role of managing editor of @tbnewswatch, @NWOnewswatch and @SNnewswatch. I'm really excited to continue being a part of telling the important stories of our city and region. I'm really looking forward to joining the great team.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported that citations have been dropped against talk radio hosts Michael Crute and Dominic Salvia for entering the Wisconsin Capitol during the pandemic .
