Weekly Log: Twins Announcer Retires, Iowa Political Show In Works

Posted on November 3, 2023 by Jon Ellis

The Minnesota Twins have announced that Dick Bremer is leaving his 40-year role as the team’s TV announcer, but will continue to work in the team’s front office. The team has not yet announced its TV talent lineup and broadcast plans for the 2024 season.

Longtime Des Moines reporter Dave Price announced that he is joining Gray TV to host a weekly political show and contribute to political coverage on Gray TV stations in the region. Though Gray doesn’t have a station in Des Moines, it does have stations in eight markets serving Iowa.

Nexstar NBC affiliate WHO-DT/13 (Des Moines) has hired Lisa Carponelli as weekend anchor.

Damon Ryan, longtime news reporter at WOMT/1240 (Manitowoc), has announced retirement plans. His last day will be Nov. 7, which is the 46th anniversary of his first day with the station. He worked in Neenah and Oshkosh prior to WOMT.

Cal Sabatini, a sports anchor for Duluth’s WDIO-TV and KBJR-TV in the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the age of 83. Services are scheduled for Nov. 9 in Duluth.

Stations

To mark its 75th anniversary, Gray NBC affiliate KWQC/6.1 (Davenport) has brought back the well-known “Hello Quad Cities” imaging and news music that it had previously used from 1991 to 2012.

The Star Tribune profiled WEQY-LP/104.7 (St. Paul) following its recent sale to the Center for Broadcast Journalism.

Good Karma’s WTMJ/620 (Milwaukee) is adding “What’s On Tap” weeknights at 6 p.m., except on nights with live sports. The hourlong show hosted by Sandy Maxx will feature “culture and creativity in Wisconsin and around the world.” The Journal Sentinel also has coverage.

After this site’s initial report on All-Christmas launches on Wednesday, one more joined the chorus on Thursday, Nov. 2: Audacy’s “Mix 105.1” (WMHX Waunakee-Madison). Surely more flips will come in the hours after this post publishes on Friday morning.
