Storm Topples Nebraska Radio Tower (Updated)

Posted on December 8, 2019 by Jon Ellis

The storm system that moved across the country after Thanksgiving toppled the tower of KQSK/97.5 (Chadron).

The station’s associated website, PanhandlePost.com, says the top five sections of KQSK’s tower collapsed after high winds and ice on Nov. 30. The station, which normally uses 100kW, returned to the air several days later with a temporary 250-Watt transmitter from its studio site.

FCC records indicate the 500-foot tower, located about 15 miles south-southwest of Chadron, was constructed in 1979. It also hosted NOAA Weather Radio station KXI20/162.525 (Chadron) and public safety communications equipment.

KQSK is owned by Eagle Communications and carries “Double Q Country” in a simulcast with KAAQ/105.9 (Alliance). Locally, the company also owns “B94.7” (KCNB Chadron), which transmits from a different site.
