Permanent DST Means CBC Schedule Changes in NW Ontario

Posted on October 31, 2026 by Jon Ellis

CBC Radio One is making some small changes to its schedule in northwestern Ontario as the region moves to permanent Daylight Saving Time, resulting in more live programming for the region.

The Ontario government announced the decision weeks after Manitoba announced its own change to permanent DST. The provincial government consulted with municipalities in the region and found that northwestern Ontario has close ties to Manitoba.

When other areas “fall back” to standard time on Nov. 1, northwestern Ontario and Manitoba will remain on Daylight Saving Time, meaning they will be an hour ahead of other parts of the Central time zone and the same time as Eastern Standard Time.

According to program schedules on the CBC website, the change will also lead to adjustments in programming on CBC Radio One’s stations in the Central time zone in northwestern Ontario. These stations include CBQQ-FM/90.5 (Fort Frances) and CBQX-FM/98.7 (Kenora).

The stations are officially regarded as secondary transmitters of CBQT-FM/88.3 (Thunder Bay). However, since Thunder Bay is in the Eastern time zone, the rebroadcasters in the Central time zone have historically delayed some regional programs by an hour to match the local clock.

Listings indicate these changes for the CBC Radio One Kenora schedule:

  • “Superior Morning,” which originates in Thunder Bay, will continue to air from 6 to 8:37 a.m. local time, meaning it will be live instead of being delayed an hour.
  • “Ontario Today,” which originates on Ottawa, will continue to air at Noon local time, meaning it will be live instead of being delayed an hour.
  • “Up North,” which originates in Sudbury and had previously aired live from 3 to 5 p.m., will continue to air live from 4 to 6 p.m.
  • “Up to Speed,” which originates in Winnipeg and had previously aired live in the 5 p.m. hour, will now air live at 3 p.m. (The program is three hours, but only one hour airs in northwestern Ontario.)

The situation could change again in the spring, since the time difference between Kenora and other parts of Ontario will again change when the rest of the province resumes Daylight Saving Time.
