Weekly Log: Anchor Changes, Wis. GM Retirements

Posted on November 22, 2024November 22, 2024 by Jon Ellis

Weigel’s CBS58 (WDJT Milwaukee) announced the hiring of Lance Allan as sports director. Allan previously worked at Scripps NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV/4.1 for 28 years.

FOX O&O KMSP/9 (Minneapolis) announced that Symone Woolridge is joining the station to anchor the 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. newscasts. Woolridge previously worked at WTMJ-TV.

Anchor/reporter Nick Weig announced that he is departing Sinclair CBS/FOX affiliate KGAN/2 (Cedar Rapids), citing health challenges.

Hearst ABC affiliate WISN-TV/12.1 (Milwaukee) announced that general manager Jan Wade will retire at the end of the year after 17 years at the station.

Morgan Murphy Media CBS affiliate WISC-TV/3.1 (Madison) announced that general manager Lyle Banks will retire at the end of the year.

Mid-West Family Radio’s “KQ98” (KQYB/98.3 Spring Grove, MN-La Crosse) has let go morning host Tony Schultz and replaced him with “Fish & Friends” from sister station “Q106” (WWQM/106.3 Middleton-Madiosn).

Jay Michaels has announced that he will begin hosting afternoons on Audacy’s “99.1 The Mix” (WMYX-FM Milwaukee) but will remain in Houston.

iHeartMedia’s WOKY/920 (Milwaukee) has changed its branding from “The Big 920” to “FOX Sports 920,” which RadioInsight notes coincides with the station dropping the syndicated Bill Michaels Show in favor of more programming from FOX Sports.

Gray NBC affiliate WOWT/6.1 (Omaha) has rebranded its newscasts as “First Alert 6,” matching the “First Alert” brand that was already used for weather.

Cathy Wurzer‘s documentary about Minnesota TV news on the 1960s, `70s, and `80s, “Broadcast Wars,” will air on Twin Cities PBS (KTCA/2.1) on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. The documentary will also be available through the PBS website and app.

All-Christmas flips are lagging behind recent years, which may be due to the later Thanksgiving this year. About 25 Upper Midwest radio stations had made the changeover as of the third Friday of November 2024, down from 35 flips by the third Friday of November 2023 and 41 in 2022. It’s a bit of a mystery why two stations chose to make this year’s change on Tuesday, Nov. 19 — perhaps because it marked five weeks to Christmas Eve?
