The FCC has approved Gray TV’s plan to buy the former NBC affiliate in central Nebraska and return the network to the station.
Gray is buying KNHL/5.1 (Hastings) from Legacy Broadcasting for $475,000 and has already been programming KNHL’s channel 5.3, carrying the CW, since last fall. The FCC agreed with Gray that it should be able to buy KNHL under a satellite exception so that it can be used to relay NBC affiliate KSNB/4.1 (Superior).
KNHL, formerly KHAS-TV, had been the market’s NBC affiliate until 2014, when Gray bought the station’s non-license assets from Hoak Media and moved the NBC lineup to KSNB, which had been a My Network TV affiliate. Gray also owns CBS affiliate KOLN/10.1 (Lincoln) and satellite KGIN/11.1 (Grand Island), which both carry KSNB-NBC on subchannels.
KNHL had been carrying the Sonlife Broadcast Network without local advertising under Legacy’s ownership.
