Four radio stations in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have changed formats amid ownership changes.
As reported last week, WUPK/94.1 (Marquette) has dropped its longtime Classic Rock format and is now Light Adult Contemporary as “94.1 The Breeze,” while WNGE/99.5 (Negaunee-Marquette) is now “99.5 K-Rock.” The changes were first reported by DX-midAMerica.
Following that set of changes, former WUPK simulcast partner WIMK/93.1 (Iron Mountain) also switched from “93 Rock” to “K-Rock” and WZNL/94.3 (Norway-Iron Mountain) switched to “The Breeze,” dropping a long-running “Star 94.3” Hot Adult Contemporary format.
The four stations are currently licensed to Sovereign Communications, which is in the process of selling WUPK and WNGE to Marquette Radio LLC and WIMK, WZNL, and four other stations to AMC Partners, which does business as Radio Results Network. As previously reported, the majority owner of Marquette Radio and the manager of AMC Partners are brothers.
Sovereign filed extensions of consummation for both deals with the FCC on Monday, July 6, a move which signals that the deals have not yet closed but that closing is still expected to happen. All four stations that changed format are now running some of the same social media contests as other RRN stations.
AMC Partners owns three other FM stations in the Marquette market. WNGE had previously carried Classic Hits, and its format change removes it from competition with AMC’s “100.3 The Point” (WUPT Gwinn-Marquette).
