Wildfire Takes CBC Station Off Air in Remote Ontario Town

Posted on June 14, 2019 by Jon Ellis

One of two radio signals in the small community of Pickle Lake, Ontario, is off the air due to a wildfire.

CBC Radio reported earlier this week that the fire destroyed the transmitter building of CBQP-FM/105.1. CBC Radio One’s regional morning newscast said Friday that it may be a few weeks before CBQP is back on the air.

CBC is advising people in the area to try tuning into a fringe signal from the network’s transmitter at Mishkeegogomang First Nation.

The only other station serving Pickle Lake is the Native Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s CJTL-FM/96.5.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said the fire, which started June 6, was at 824 hectares (2,036 acres) and being held as of June 14. Pickle Lake residents were on alert but ultimately did not have to evacuate, unlike the thousands who had to evacuate Pikangikum a few weeks ago.
