“The Current” Drops Several Non-AAA Sunday Shows

Posted on July 7, 2020 by Jon Ellis

Minnesota Public Radio’s “The Current” is adjusting its Sunday lineup, dropping several shows that don’t directly fit its Adult Alternative format.

The network announced this week that King’s Speech, a Jazz show hosted by Minneapolis musician Dave King, will end with a special two-hour show on July 12. Meanwhile, syndicated shows American Routes, Sound Opinions, and Live from Here are being dropped from the schedule.

Live from Here recently ended production. MPR said the changes will offer an “expanded presence of local Minnesota music on The Current’s airwaves as part of Sunday evening programming.”

American Routes, which aired Sunday mornings on The Current, will continue to air on MPR’s Radio Heartland stream, heard online and on an HD2 signal in the Twin Cities. It is also heard on competing station KBEM/88.5 (Minneapolis).

After the initial posting of this story, a reader pointed out that Bill DeVille’s United States of Americana remains on the air Sunday mornings from 8 to 10.

Meanwhile, the Duluth Local Show will now be heard statewide on Sunday evenings at 8.

Other time periods will be filled with The Current’s Adult Alternative format.
