Upper Peninsula PBS station WNMU/13 (Marquette) is poised to add three channels, doubling its number of services.
The announcement came in a news release from owner Northern Michigan University about the launch of the statewide Michigan Learning Channel. The new channel, which will also be carried on five stations in the lower peninsula, will be seen on a WNMU subchannel when it launches in January.
The channel will include blocks of programming for each grade level. Funding was provided by the Michigan Legislature and the Governor’s Education Emergency Relief fund. The university will also add a position to engage with local school districts, superintendents and teachers.
The programming on the other two new channels was not announced, but the news release said one of them may be devoted to Native American programming.
WNMU currently carries PBS programs on its DT1 and DT3 channels and PBS Kids on DT2.
