FCC Monitor: Northern Minnesota AM Station Seeks Power Increase

Posted on December 27, 2020 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to stories previously reported here and smaller recent FCC filings and actions that do not merit a full story of their own at this time:

Minnesota

R&J Broadcasting’s WWWI/1270 (Baxter-Brainerd) applied to increase its daytime power from 5kW to 12kW non-directional. It would remain 5kW directional at night. WWWI also has an FM translator; it simulcasts Conservative Talk with KLKS/100.1 (Breezy Point) during the day and carries SportsMap Radio nights and weekends.

HC2 Broadcasting’s KWJM-LD/15 submitted a license to cover application changing its community of license from Rochester to Minneapolis. The callsign is apparently an homage to the fictional WJM-TV of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. KWJM-LD, which carries Court TV on its primary channel, has already been transmitting from the IDS Center with 15kW directional after a hop up from Rochester. (HC2’s KMQV-LD, which made a similar move, remains licensed to Rochester.)

Meanwhile, HC2 Broadcasting Telemundo affiliate KJNK-LD/25 (Minneapolis) is back up to full power of 15kW but is now using a directional antenna limiting its signal to the east. The change was needed because WQOW (Eau Claire, WI) was relocated to RF channel 25 in the recent spectrum repack. KJNK-LD had been temporarily using 1kW while the new directional antenna was installed.

Riverfront Broadcasting of Minnesota applied for a license to cover for K237GT/95.3 (Blue Earth). The new 250-Watt translator, granted as part of the AM revitalization effort, relays the News/Classic Hits format of KBEW/1560. Station social media posts indicate it signed on in September.

Nebraska

Hearst ABC affiliate KETV/7.1 (Omaha) was granted a construction permit to increase power from 700kW to 1,000kW, remaining on RF channel 20.

Legacy Communications’ KRGI/1430 (Grand Island) continues to operate at reduced power of 250 Watts non-directional at night while engineering work continues on its nighttime directional array. The nighttime power has been reduced since 2017. The station’s request for extension of special temporary authority says the pandemic has prevented a consulting engineer from travelling to the site to complete impedance tuning. KRGI is licensed for 1kW directional at night and uses 5kW non-directional during the day.

South Dakota

Riverfront Broadcasting applied for a license to cover for K271CW/102.1 (Yankton). The 250-Watt translator was granted during the AM revitalization window to relay KYNT/1450. The station’s social media posts indicate K271CW has been on the air since at least August.

Riverfront Broadcasting applied for a license to cover for K255DE/98.9 (Pierre), which was granted during the AM revitalization window to relay KCCR/1240. The station’s filing indicates it is now on the air, though the FM frequency does not appear to have been mentioned on KCCR’s website and social media feeds.

Wisconsin

The Milwaukee Area Technical College Board’s WMVS was granted a modification of its planned digital replacement translator on channel 10 to specify 590 Watts instead of 1kW.

HC2 Broadcasting’s W23BW-D (Madison) was granted a construction permit to increase from 11.81kW to 15kW.
