FM Station Upgrades Eau Claire Coverage

Posted on March 14, 2021 by Jon Ellis

Mid-West Family Broadcasting Eau Claire’s “92.9 The X” (WECL Elk Mound) has completed a move to a tower closer to Eau Claire and changed its community of license in the process.

“The X” carries an Rock format that tied for second in Nielsen Audio’s Fall 2020 12+ ratings.

WECL had previously broadcast from a site on the northwest side of the Eau Claire metro, near Elk Mound. It’s now transmitting from the longtime site of sister station WIAL/94.1 in the Town of Seymour and transmitting with 5.8kW/92m (Class A). It changed its community of license to Lake Hallie as part of the move.

Lake Hallie is an incorporated village between Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls with a population of about 6,500.

Because FCC rules do not allow a station to change its community of license if it leaves a community without any license, WIAL changed its community of license from Eau Claire to Elk Mound to “backfill.”

WIAL, originally WEAU-FM, had been licensed to Eau Claire since 1949 and was the city’s oldest FM license. It continues to use its longtime facility after the community of license change to Elk Mound, running an Adult Contemporary format as “I-94.”
