The University of Wisconsin-Parkside’s radio station in Kenosha, which went off the air in the early months of the pandemic last year, won’t return.
WIPZ-LP/101.5 had suspended operations in May 2020. It filed for license renewal last July but the FCC dismissed that application on June 22 after the university decided to close down the station.
“The decision was made (May 14) by the university and (Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee) chairperson to not renew the license in light of the rising costs and low student interest,” reads a statement on the station’s Facebook page.
WIPZ-LP had been on the air for five years and was licensed to the UW Board of Regents.
The university is planning to create a podcast club in the fall, according to the Facebook post.
