FCC Monitor: Low-Power TV Station’s Move Towards Minneapolis Continues

Posted on October 17, 2021 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to stories previously reported here and other recent FCC filings and actions.

Michigan

ABC/NBC affiliate WGTQ/8 (Sault Ste. Marie) has completed an upgrade from 15kW to 60kW.

Sovereign Communications submitted another request for extension of special temporary authority for WYSS/99.5 (Sault Ste. Marie) and WMKD/105.5 (Pickford-Sault Ste. Marie), which have been operating at reduced power since a 2018 tower collapse. The filings repeat that the station it is continuing to work through the insurance claims process. The stations are both licensed for 100kW; WYSS is temporarily using 1.3kW and and WMKD is using 700 Watts.

Minnesota

SagamoreHill of Minneapolis’ KMWE-LD/17 (St. Cloud) is now at its third transmitter site in as many months, informing the FCC that the station’s construction permit for a facility at a residence in the northwestern Twin Cities suburb of Corcoran has been constructed as authorized in the underlying construction permit. The 7.5kW facility is permitted to broadcast with a directional pattern slightly overlapping with its previous coverage area, as required when LPTV stations change transmitter sites. The application for a license to cover the new facility came three days after the FCC granted the permit.

Q Media Properties closed on its purchase of KBEK/95.5 (Mora) from Jay Mankie and Mary Lodin on Oct. 8. Q Media has been operating the station since last November.

Nebraska

The FCC approved a construction permit for Independent Omaha Radio Project to move its KIOR-LP (Omaha) from 98.1 to 91.9 and relocate its transmitter site to the west, changing from its current 100W/11m to 25W/59m.

North Dakota

The FCC approved license renewal for Fort Berthold Communications Enterprises’ KMHA/91.3 (Four Bears) after reaching a consent decree over concerns about the station’s online public inspection file.

South Dakota

The FCC denied a request to extend the construction deadline for low-power TV station K24LL-D (Wasta).

Wisconsin

The University of Northwestern-St. Paul’s W230AN/93.9 (Hayward) has completed an upgrade from 50 to 250 Watts. W230AN relays “Life 97-3” (KDNW Duluth).
