The University of Northern Iowa’s student radio station has left the FM airwaves and relaunched as an online stream.
The Board of Control for Student Broadcasting at UNI surrendered the license of KULT-LP/94.5 (Cedar Falls) in a Dec. 27 letter to the FCC, requesting a Jan. 10 shutdown date. The license for the 100-Watt station was formally canceled on Jan. 27.
KULT-LP had been on the air since 2003.
On Jan. 1, “Radio UNI” launched as an online stream. An announcement said the transition would allow the group to save money by eliminating the costs of traditional broadcasting and “explore new formats.”
The UNI campus is also home to an Iowa Public Radio office. The university previously controlled KHKE/89.5 (Cedar Falls) and KUNI/90.9 (Cedar Falls) before the three Regents universities combined their efforts to form IPR.
