Weekly Log: Iowa Anchor Leaving after 51 Years

Posted on February 14, 2025February 13, 2025 by Jon Ellis

Longtime news anchor Ron Steele has announced plans to depart Allen Media NBC affiliate KWWL/7.1 (Waterloo), telling viewers, “I have come to an agreement with, and accepted an offer from, KWWL, which will end my career here at KWWL on Thursday, Feb. 27.” Steele joined the station in 1974 as a sports anchor and later moved to news, interviewing several presidents, covering the Gulf War, and reporting from major sports events.

The Pioneer Press reports that meteorologist Wren Clair is no longer with Hubbard ABC affiliate KSTP-TV/5.1 (St. Paul). Clair had appeared on KSTP-TV’s evening newscasts until the station moved a different meteorologist into the shift last fall.

Reporter Emily Roberts has departed Gray ABC affiliate WBAY-TV/2.1 (Green Bay) for a job with a local non-profit.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting introduced Patrick Williams as the new host of afternoon news magazine “All Things Considered.”

Gordon Hultengren announced that he will be hosting middays at Saga’s KIOA/93.3 (Des Moines) while retaining his current morning shift in Columbus, Ohio.

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association notes the recent passing of two longtime Madison radio engineers. 62-year-old Roy Simmons III was the chief engineer for iHeartMedia’s Madison group and had previously worked as an engineer and on-air talent at Mid-West Family Broadcasting. 71-year-old John Bauer retired from the chief engineer role at Mid-West in 2023 and had also worked at stations in La Crosse, Iowa, and Michigan.

Hearst ABC affiliate WISN-TV/12.1 (Milwaukee) announced that it will host a Wisconsin Supreme Court debate on March 12 at 7 p.m. The debate will be simulcast on ABC affiliates in Eau Claire, Green Bay, La Crosse, and Wausau.
