Three years ago I set off on a break from work after deciding to leave a previous job. It was a spectacular summer of travel (except for a COVID-19 setback and one busted side mirror!)
When I left that previous job, I honestly didn’t know what was next. As it worked out, after a 20-week break from work, my next opportunity was a job that didn’t even exist when I started my travels.
Now, my time in that position has come to an end due to a reduction in force. I consider myself very fortunate that, after more than a quarter-century in a volatile business, this is the first time that leaving a job was not my idea.
I’m back to that question that every broadcaster has probably asked themselves over and over again: what do I want to be when I grow up?
It’s time for a gut check. Why did I get into the business in the first place? What do I like about it? What drives me crazy? When does it feel like I’m getting paid to have fun? When does it feel like it’s just a paycheck?
I’m again the position where I honestly don’t know what’s next. But it’s pretty clear from this website that I just might be a little passionate about the media and broadcasting.
Of course, summer is a good time to have no work commitments.
So, I intend to enjoy a “mini-retirement” again. There are places I haven’t been, places I’d like to revisit, and plenty more places I’ll discover along the way.
Then, who knows!
