Weekly Log: Broadcast Legend Passes; PBS North Axes Longtime Show

Posted on September 26, 2025September 28, 2025 by Jon Ellis

Longtime Twin Cities TV and radio broadcaster Stan Turner has died at the age of 81. Turner is best known for his years at Hubbard Broadcasting’s KSTP-TV and All News Channel, reaching a national audience. He also worked in radio: first at KDWB and KSTP and, following his time in TV, at Minnesota News Network and the former KLBB/1220. Turner is a member of the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame. His obituary says a Stan Turner Journalism Scholarship has been established at the U of M’s Hubbard School of Journalism; memorials can also be made to Our Lady of Peace hospice facility in St. Paul.

UPDATE: Two Upper Midwest stations were impacted by Nexstar and Sinclair‘s decisions not to air “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on their stations following the show’s return to the ABC schedule. Nexstar’s ABC affiliates include KCAU/9.1 (Sioux City) while Sinclair owns KHGI/13.1 (Kearney); reports indicate the stations aired news programming in Kimmel’s former timeslot on the first three nights he was back on the air. On Sept. 26, after this post was initially published, Sinclair and Nexstar both announced that they would return Kimmel to their stations.

PBS North (WDSE/8.1 Duluth) announced the cancelation of longtime Friday night public affairs show “Almanac North” effective Oct. 2, citing recent changes in funding. The 33-year-old show had undergone a major overhaul two years ago after two retirements. Meanwhile, the station announced that a successor, “In Business with Almanac North,” will launch on Thursday nights in November. The new show will also simulcast on “The North 103.3” (WDSE-FM) at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Following federal funding clawbacks, KCCI-TV reports that Iowa Public Radio continues to face a $1 million budget shortfall despite a record amount of people participating in its fall funding drive.

Scripps NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV/4 (Milwaukee) has promoted Andrea Albers to morning co-anchor.

Civic Media announced that Connie Fellman is joining the company as its Green Bay reporter. Fellman previously worked at three Green Bay TV stations.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel followed up on the impending format change at WLUM-FM/102.1 (Milwaukee).

Mid-West Family Broadcasting’s “Greatest Hits 98.1” (WISM Altoona-Eau Claire) showed followers the moment it began broadcasting from its new studio:
