Radio veteran Matt Miller has joined Big Radio as morning host at “Q102” (WQLF/102.1 Lena, IL). He will also be heard on “The Big FM 93.7” (WBGR Monroe, WI) and contribute to the group’s eight other stations. “I’m excited to join Big Radio full time and be part of a team that truly values local radio,” Miller said in a news release. “This is a great opportunity to continue learning, growing, and serving the communities we broadcast to.” Miller has more than 40 years of broadcasting experience and most recently worked at a station in Rockford.
Longtime Wisconsin Public Radio host Norman Gilliland has announced plans to retire after 42 years with the network. Gilliland hosts “Midday Classics” and is a reader and editor for “Chapter A Day.” He also previously worked on “University of the Air” and “Old Time Radio Drama.” Gilliland will host his last show on June 19.
Paul Huttner, chief meteorologist at Minnesota Public Radio, has announced plans to retire April 30. Huttner has been with MPR since 2007 and delivers forecasts during afternoon drive in addition to hosting the “Climate Cast” podcast and contributing to the Updraft Blog, which he launched. Huttner began his broadcast career at WCCO-TV/4 (Minneapolis) in 1988 and has also worked at TV stations in Chicago and Tucson.
Ashley Moore has joined Tegna NBC affiliate KARE/11 (Minneapolis) as sports anchor/reporter.
Scripps NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV/4 (Milwaukee) has named Andrea Williams the permanent host of “Milwaukee Tonight,” the station’s 6:30 p.m. news and entertainment program.
News anchor Katie Easter has announced her departure from Allen Media NBC affiliate KWWL/7 (Waterloo).
The Nebraska Broadcasters Association announced that it will induct John Knicely, Kevin Kugler, Steve Lundy and Ken Siemek into its Hall of Fame during this year’s annual convention. The ceremony will take place Aug. 11 in Lincoln.
The St. Louis Cardinals and Gray Media announced that 10 Cardinals games will be carried on stations in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Ottawa, Quincy, and Rochester-Mason City, along with other markets in the Midwest. A similar announcement was also recently made for Kansas City Royals games, but the markets outside of Kansas City have not been specified.
It’s the stuff radio DX’ing dreams are made of: During a recent power outage at a North Dakota FM transmitter site, an engineer plugged a software-defined radio into one of the antennas on the tower to see what he could hear!
