The Government of Canada announced that it will completely shut down its Weatheradio service on March 16. Like NOAA Weather Radio in the U.S., Canada’s Weatheradio operates on 162.4 to 162.55 MHz. Canada’s radio marine broadcasts will continue in regions including Lake Superior and the Manitoba Lakes. Landlubbing listeners are being advised to get their forecasts online, which, of course, is limited to locations where users can access the internet.
KCJJ/1630 (Iowa City) reports that station co-owner Janet Soboroff has died at 77 after a battle with ALS. Soboroff owned KCJJ with her husband, Steve, and worked at the station for a decade after a career as a social worker for 30 years and school guidance counselor for 10 years.
La Crosse radio and TV veteran Duane Moore has died at 93. Moore’s obituary notes that he was the last surviving on-air personality from the initial on-air staff of WKBT/8 in 1954. He also worked at WKBH/1410. Moore delivered weather forecasts on WKBT until 1967 and later worked in advertising and public relations.
Reporter Harrison Klopp has joined Hubbard ABC affiliate KSTP-TV/5 (St. Paul). BringMeTheNews reports Klopp is the son of Esme Murphy, a longtime anchor/reporter at CBS O&O WCCO-TV/4 (Minneapolis).
Reporter Alex Jokich has departed KSTP-TV. “I’m giving myself room to pause, recalibrate and figure out what’s next,” Jokich wrote in a social media post
Reporter Brittney Ermon has also departed KSTP-TV, announcing that she will “still be chasing stories, just in a new place.”
The Milwaukee Business Journal and Journal Sentinel report that Lindsey Slater is no longer with Hearst ABC affiliate WISN-TV/12 (Milwaukee).
Woodward Communications’ Appleton-Oshkosh Sports station, “The Score,” has added two midday shows, according to a press release posted by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. “The Bullpen with PJ and Nick” (Paul Johnson and Nick Vitrano) airs at 11, followed by “The Show with Tony G and Leo” (Tony Giordano and Leo Kiper, Jr.) from 12 to 2. “The Score” airs on WSCO/1570 (Appleton), W237AA/95.3 (Appleton), and W256DD/99.1 (Oshkosh).
As first noted by RadioInsight, Mike Neville has moved from afternoons at “101.9 The Keg” (KOOO La Vista-Omaha) to the same daypart on “Sweet 98.5” (KQKQ Council Bluffs-Omaha). KOOO is in the process of being sold to Nebraska Public Media.
2026 NAB Crystal Radio Award winners include Hubbard Radio’s “KB101” (KBHP/101.1 Bemidji), Audacy’s WCCO/830 (Minneapolis), and iHeartMedia’s “KAT 103.7” (KXKT Glenwood-Omaha).
A belated note that KXGN-TV/5 (Glendive, MT) and KYUS-TV/3 (Miles City, MT) are now carrying Montana PBS after Montana State University’s purchase of the stations last year. The sale ended commercial broadcasting in Glendive, which had been America’s smallest TV market. DISH Network has replaced KXGN-TV’s former CBS and NBC channels in Glendive with feeds from Rapid City, joining that market’s ABC and FOX affiliates. (Rapid City’s CBS affiliate, KCLO, is a satellite of KELO-TV Sioux Falls and carries CBS prime time from 6 to 9 p.m. Mountain time, which is the same time it had aired on KXGN-TV.) Ironically, a national PBS feed is currently included in DISH’s Glendive package rather than Montana PBS. DirecTV does not offer broadcast network service in Glendive and Mid-Rivers shut down its cable system in 2023.
