New TV Station Plans St. Cloud-Area Transmitter, Rimshotting Metro

Posted on July 18, 2022 by Jon Ellis

Radiant Life Ministries/Tri-State Christian Television has proposed a new TV station that would theoretically reach the northwestern Twin Cities metro while also serving central Minnesota.

Radiant Life won the new full-power station on channel 7, licensed to Alexandria, in the recent FCC auction.

The new station has now formally applied for a facility using 140kW from the KCLD/104.7 tower west of St. Cloud. The tower is about 60 miles from larger Twin Cities suburbs such as Maple Grove.

The facility would provide theoretical rooftop antenna reception to the northwestern Twin Cities metro, though it should be noted that few metro-area households have rooftop antennas. Under most circumstances, it would not be possible to receive a VHF digital TV signal with an indoor antenna at that distance.

As previously noted here, the full-power license status will give the new station must-carry rights on cable and satellite providers across the Minneapolis TV market.

Illinois-based TCT also has stations in Duluth, Sioux Falls, Des Moines, and Iowa City, among other places.

The channel 7 allotment became available when the FCC paid CBS nearly $10 million to take KCCO/7 off the air as part of the spectrum auction.

Historical footnote: Channel 7 was originally allotted to St. Cloud before it was moved to Alexandria.
