New LPFM Station Granted for Northwest Twin Cities Metro

Posted on February 18, 2024February 18, 2024 by Jon Ellis

The FCC has granted AddiEun Foundation a construction permit for a new low-power FM station in the northwestern Twin Cities metro.

The CP calls for the new station to transmit with 33 Watts from a distinctive tower in Plymouth (above), owned by American Towers, which is also home to a low-power TV station. The new LPFM station’s main coverage area will extend to portions of Minnetonka, Wayzata, New Hope, and Golden Valley.

The Minneapolis-based AddiEun Foundation’s application stated the station will offer “an on-air space where when Black, Indigenous, and liberation-minded people can find feel-good, anti-oppressive music, aspirational messages, culturally affirmative programs, and access to resources that is not limited by the reservations of advertisers.”

The grant of new FM stations in the Twin Cities metro area has become rare due to the crowded nature of the dial. Under FCC spacing rules, there is no more room on the band for a new FM station that would reach the full metro.

An unrelated low-power FM station, WFNU-LP, already uses 94.1 in St. Paul.
