Changes for Several Secondary Radio Transmitters in NW Ontario

Posted on March 11, 2019 by Jon Ellis

The CRTC has approved a move to FM for CKDR-3 (Hudson). The rebroadcaster currently transmits on AM 1450 with 40 Watts and will move to FM 97.5 with 27 Watts, relaying the Adult Contemporary format of CKDR-FM/92.7 (Dryden). Hudson, with a population of about 500 people, is the last of CKDR’s five retransmitting sites to convert to FM.

The CBC has applied to move 40-Watt Radio One outlet CBLB/1340 (Schreiber) to 90.9 FM with 130 Watts. The new facility will reach just over 1,000 year-round residents on Lake Superior’s North Shore. Last summer, the CBC converted its former AM rebroadcasters to the east in Terrace Bay and Marathon to a combined FM facility, CBLM-FM/107.5 (Marathon). CBC Radio One has a few dozen transmitters in northwestern Ontario, and CBLB is one of the last several that are still on AM.

A belated note that last fall, the CRTC approved a rebroadcasting transmitter for United Christian Broadcasters’ CJOA-FM (Thunder Bay) in Nipigon. The new rebroadcaster will operate on 92.5 with 50 Watts.
