A storm has knocked down the tower of KEYA/88.5 (Belcourt), taking the border region’s only full-power radio signal off the air.
The station says on Facebook that it’s believed the 47-year-old tower collapsed due to ice buildup and high winds. No one was injured.
KEYA continues to stream its programming online, and says they are exploring the possibility of returning at low-power sometime next week:
KEYA normally transmits with 19kW/110m (class C3).
The station is located on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation and carries a wide variety of local information and programming, as well as Native Voice One’s “Native America Calling” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
Belcourt’s only other local radio signal is Catholic broadcaster KXYM-LP/98.9. The community otherwise receives only fringe signals, mostly from Canada.
