Civic Media Buys 7 Wis. Radio Signals from Magnum

Posted on February 17, 2023 by Jon Ellis

Fast-growing Wisconsin radio operator Civic Media is purchasing another seven signals, this time from Magnum Media.

The $3.65 million deal, filed with the FCC on Friday, includes one full-power FM station, four FM translators, and two AM stations. They are:

  • WRJN/1400 (Racine) and its FM translators, W260CV/99.9 (Racine) and W251BU/98.1 (Kenosha), which run News and Classic Hits
  • WLXR/1490 (La Crosse), which carries Oldies
  • WEZY/105.7 (Chippewa Falls-Eau Claire), which Magnum recently purchased and carries an Adult Contemporary format
  • W228EG/93.5 (Eau Claire), which Magnum recently upgraded and currently relays WEZY
  • W239CV/95.7 (Oshkosh), which was last reported to be relaying a Catholic radio network and has a construction permit to move to 102.5

Magnum will retain the rights to the WLXR callsign. It has other stations in La Crosse and Racine and will still have 20 full-power stations around the state after the sale to Civic.

Civic, which began buying stations just last summer, currently owns nine AM stations and three full-power FM stations and has pending agreements to buy another two AM stations. With all pending deals, it will have 13 AM stations, four full-power FM stations, and 14 FM translators.

Civic has launched Liberal Talk formats on many of the stations, while several others have continued to carry music formats.

The Madison-based company is headed by CEO Sage Weil, who owns 90% of the company. The other 10% is held by talk host Michael Crute.
