FCC Monitor: More Low-Power TV Activity as Deadlines Near

Posted on July 4, 2022 by Jon Ellis

The following are updates to previously-reported items and other recent FCC filings and actions:

Iowa

William Penn University’s KWPU/90.5 (Oskaloosa) applied to upgrade from 1kW to 3.9kW, remaining on its existing tower.

Edge Spectrum applied to downgrade future low-power TV station K31PP-D (Sioux City) from 15kW to 100W. The station faces a Sept. 6 construction deadline.

Minnesota

Educational Media Foundation “K-Love” translator K260BA/99.9 (Coon Rapids), which transmits from downtown Minneapolis, notified the FCC that it has switched its input station from the HD3 signal of iHeartMedia’s KFXN-FM/100.3 to the HD2 signal of iHeart’s KTCZ/97.1. Programming is received via IP.

The FCC has approved applications to move W236DF/95.1 (Brainerd) and K286DB/105.1 (Brainerd) to move to a taller tower, widening their coverage areas. W236DF will also get an upgrade to 250 Watts. The translators relay KVBR/1340 and KLIZ/1380, respectively.

Pensacola Christian College’s KPCS/89.7 (Princeton) was granted a construction permit to increase its antenna height from 42m to 74m above average terrain. As previously reported, the increase will be accompanied by a drop to 15.5kW ERP, allowing the station to resolve a transmitter problem.

The FCC approved changes to Gray TV future low-power TV station K30QY-D (Oakland) to move its transmitter just over the Iowa border to a tower near Northwood, where it would transmit with 800 Watts using a highly directional antenna covering a small rural area. The station faces a July 7 construction deadline.

Nebraska

K252FV/98.3 (McCook) submitted a request for silent authority, confirming the station went off the air July 1 for financial reasons as earlier reported. The application says a request for silent authority is also being filed by parent station KNGN/1360 (McCook).

North Dakota

The FCC has approved Central Dakota Enterprises’ purchase of KXRP/91.3 (Bismarck) and K206EI/89.1 (Williston) from Real Presence Radio.

Gray TV informed the FCC that new 15kW low-power TV station K35PO-D (Bismarck) has been built as authorized in its construction permit. Programming is unknown.

Gray TV applied to upgrade low-power TV station K28QT-D (Dickinson), which has already applied for its license to cover, from 350W to 15kW.

South Dakota

Roseland Broadcasting closed on its purchase of the construction permit of future low-power TV station K17OO-D (Sioux Falls) from Casey C. Peterson.

Wisconsin

Zoe Communications’ WZEZ/104.9 (Balsam Lake) notified the FCC that it has activated an HD Radio signal.

Michael Crute and Sage Weil’s WAUK Radio LLC closed on its purchase of WAUK/540 (Jackson-Milwaukee) and W266DR/101.1 (Waukesha) from Good Karma Broadcasting on June 30.

Roseland Broadcasting closed on its purchase of low-power TV station WPVS-LD/9 (Milwaukee) from Polnet Communications.
