Weekly Log: Minneapolis, Duluth Anchors Head East

Jan Mickelson, former longtime host at WHO/1040 (Des Moines), has died. The Des Moines Register reports that Mickelson had suffered a stroke in 2015, and his family updated followers on Facebook that he was admitted to the hospital over the weekend.

Meteorologist Guy Brown announced plans to depart Tegna NBC affiliate KARE 11 (Minneapolis) for a job at Spectrum News NY1 in New York.

Sports anchor/reporter Dillon Morello announced he is leaving ABC affiliate WDIO/10 (Duluth) for a new job in Buffalo, NY.

All Access reports that Big Radio in Janesville has hired Janesville Gazette reporter Neil Johnson.

Bring Me The News reported on DJ Walt Dizzo (Walter Raschick)’s battle with a congenital heart defect. Dizzo is the music director at KUWS/91.3 (Superior) and former director of Duluth’s Homegrown Music Festival.

A belated note that the iHeart Minneapolis and Leighton St. Cloud groups both have two finalists for Personality of the Year in the NAB Marconi Radio Awards: Chris Carr, Kia Becht and Sam Sansevere of “K102” (KEEY/102.1) and Dave Ryan with Falen, Jenny and Drake on KDWB/101.3 are finalists in the large market category. Meanwhile, Kat and J.J. Holiday from KCLD/104.7 and Kelly and Wood from “Wild 99” (KZPK/98.9) are finalists in the small market category.

Station of the Year finalists in the NAB Marconi Radio Awards include:

  • Hubbard’s “KS95” (KSTP-FM/94.5 St. Paul) in the large market category
  • iHeart’s WHO/1040 (Des Moines) in the medium market category
  • Gopher Communications’ KROX/1260 (Crookston, MN) in the small market category
  • Leighton’s “Wild 99” (KZPK/98.9 Paynesville-St. Cloud) in the small market category
  • Audacy’s WCCO/830 (Minneapolis) in the News/Talk category
  • iHeart’s “The Fan” (KFXN-FM/100.3 Minneapolis) in the Sports category

Winners will be announced Oct. 25 during NAB Show New York.
