The following are updates to previously-reported items and other recent regulatory filings and actions concerning Upper Midwest broadcast stations. This report is created by the author and is not an official report of the FCC.
Iowa
Iowa Public Radio has surrendered the construction permit for new station KICQ/90.7 (Manly), which would have served the Mason City area. The permit had faced a Jan. 13 construction deadline. KICQ would have replaced IPR Classical translator K214BA/90.7 (Mason City); the network also operates full-power AM and FM stations in Mason City carrying the network’s News and Studio One services.
La Fiesta 971 LLC’s K246CJ/97.1 (Sioux City) applied to relocate from its current tower site in the northeastern part of the city to the KTFC/103.3 tower just east of the city, remaining 250 Watts and widening its coverage area due to the higher antenna height. K246CJ will continue to relay KZOI/1250 (Dakota City, NE).
Townsquare Media’s KBOB/1170 (Davenport) was granted another extension of special temporary authority to transmit with its nighttime directional antenna pattern 24 hours per day while it continues repairs. The latest filing says new components have been installed, but additional issues have been discovered with the antenna system.
Michigan
Full Potential Ministry submitted a license to cover application for new station WDRK/89.5 (Laurium). The application did not specify whether the new station has signed on. WDRK will use 1kW/144m (class A), serving an area north of Houghton.
Minnesota
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s WGZS/89.1 (Cloquet) requested another extension of special authority to operate at reduced power with its backup transmitter as it continues work to repair its main transmitter. The latest filing says the transmitter could not achieve full power despite repairs by the tube manufacturer. The exact power level currently being used has not been specified.
Selective TV’s K17NW-D (Alexandria) went off the air Jan. 13 due to equipment failure. K17NW had relayed KSTC-TV (Minneapolis); a post on Selective TV’s social media feed says KSTC programming has been moved to a different transmitter.
The FCC granted a modification to future University of Northwestern-St. Paul station KDGR/88.1 (Grand Rapids) to specify the tower site currently used by UNWSP’s K201IX/88.1, rather than a tower south of town as had originally been planned. KDGR’s permit remains 5kW but the antenna height above average terrain drops from 75 to 55 meters with the move.
Nebraska
Central City Baptist Church reports that KOOW-LP/95.1 (Central City) went off the air Dec. 23 due to transmitter failure.
Facing a March 4 construction deadline, MyBridgeRadio has been granted a change to plans for future station KMBO/88.7 (O’Neill). The permit originally specified 25kW/87m (class C3) from a tower near Atkinson; the modified permit now calls for 180W/99m (class A) from a tower just east of O’Neill.
North Dakota
Hi-Line Radio Fellowship, operator of Your Network of Praise, has signed on new 400-Watt station KDND/89.1 (Dickinson). KDND is the fourth North Dakota signal for the Montana-based network. The sign-on of KDND and other stations was discussed in the network’s weekly update.
American Christian Radio has signed on new 400-Watt station KYPT/90.7 (Minot). Programming is not immediately known.
South Dakota
Following the sign-on of SDPB’s KWSD/89.1 (Mitchell), Family Worship Center Church’s K207EW/89.3 (Mitchell) has moved to 90.1 as K211GE. It remains 250 Watts.
Wisconsin
Community Public Radio has withdrawn its application for a new station on 91.5 in Waukesha, which had been one of eight competing applications filed in a 2021 filing window (REC Networks summary). Two other applicants have been identified as tentative selectees for the frequency; the process is still pending.
