Legacy Communications/G.I. Family Radio has changed the formats of two radio stations in Nebraska’s Tri-Cities, marking the company’s fourth and fifth format changes this year.
As first noted by RadioInsight, the company’s Classic Country format has been upgraded to a full signal on KKJK/103.1 (Ravenna) as “KJ Country.” 103.1 had previously carried a Contemporary Hits format as “2Day FM.”
Meanwhile, former “Legend” Classic Country frequencies K278BR/103.5 and KRGI-FM-HD4 (Grand Island) have flipped to Classic Hip-Hop as “Mix 103.5.”
103.5’s new format has no direct competition; the flip of 103.1 leaves NRG Media’s “Hits 106” (KQKY/105.9 Kearney) as the only Contemporary Hits station in the market.
The changes come after Legacy’s KMTY/97.7 (Gibbon) switched to a Sports Talk/Rock hybrid as “The Zone” and K259CZ/99.7 and KRGI-FM-HD3 (Grand Island) switched to Contemporary Christian as “Jett FM.”
A Legacy station in McCook also flipped to “Jett FM,” dropping Contemporary Hits.
The format changes come ahead of ownership changes in the Tri-Cities. Usher Media, owned by Alan and Joanna Usher, is awaiting FCC approval to buy five stations in the Tri-Cities from NRG Media. The Ushers are currently minority owners and managers at Legacy/G.I. Family Radio; an FCC filing said they will divest their interest in Legacy and resign from management positions there when the purchase of the NRG stations is complete.
